The infamous intro to the 1989 video game Zero Wing was so poorly translated from its original Japanese, that it became one of the very first internet memes. The iconic phrase “All your base are belong to us” shows that a proper translation can mean all the difference between keeping the spirit of the original, and becoming a laughing stock to anyone who speaks the language. Below you’ll find my Dutch re-translation of the infamous intro, with all of its original intentions intact.

 

In het jaar 2101…

…breekt er oorlog uit.

Kapitein: Wat krijgen we nou?!

Operator: Iemand heeft een bom geplaatst!

Operator: Kapitein, we krijgen bericht binnen!

Kapitein: Wat?!

Operator: Het hoofdscherm wordt geactiveerd.

Kapitein: Jij bent het dus!

CATS: Hoe maakt u het, heren?

CATS: Jullie basis is nu volledig in ons bezit.

CATS: En we zullen snel genoeg met jullie afrekenen.

Kapitein: Wat zeg je?!

CATS: Jullie laatste uur heeft geslagen.

CATS: Hahahahaha!

Operator: Kapitein, uw orders?!

Kapitein: Lanceer alle ZIGs!
